When we moved to Houston, we had a few criteria that had to be met in house hunting: limited carpeting (carpet and
Molson don't mix well), updated appliances, and large trees (there is no reason to live in Houston and not have trees). We found and fell in love with our house because it possessed all of the criteria. At the time,
countertops were not a top priority as long as they were not pastel - which we did see. As we started to tweak things in our home, we created a "wish list" of home improvements. Last summer, we replaced the carpet and updated the upstairs bathrooms.
Countertops were next on the list and so after nearly 3 years of white
formica countertops, we have finally replaced them with beautiful granite.
Adding granite has been quite an experience - you go to the "rock yard" and tag the number of "slabs" that you need for your house. We spent about 15 minutes at the "rock yard" it took an hour to get to and found the perfect stone. The granite people cut and polish the stone. They arrive at your house and remove the old countertops, attempting to preserve the backsplash, and then replace the countertops with the granite. It is a very noisy and dirty job!
We are so pleased with the new look - the kitchen seems like a different room - that we had to share! I wanted to show the difference so there is a before shot:
